The best one is the refusal of taking me (and others from what I have read) to destinations that is under 15dhs. When I said willing to let the Dh55 go, I meant, I wasn't expecting any change from the transaction. I tend to tip if I feel the service warrants it, not as a matter of course. I got into a cab at a mall taxi stand at about 7.30pm-ish, greeted the driver, told him where I was going, he drove me there as expected and we had no conversation on the way.
There was nothing extraordinary about the journey. I handed Dh 55 and opened the door to get out. I promise I did not wait for or ask for my change. I hadn't even gotten out before the driver launched into a tirade about the lack of exact change with the comments listed above.
Working in the international development field and having myself spent the majority of my youth in sub-Saharan Africa, i certainly do not need a lecture on the value of money to people working tough jobs. Good for you, that you've had great taxi experiences that have led you to tip well. If I feel like the service warrants it, I too will tip well (having also worked in the service industry whilst in college).
I've had awesome experiences too, in many other places in much much much less developped cities, but I also just had these 2 very not awesome experiences within 2 days, in the same city, so. I'm sorry, with all due respect, Bedou girl, I still stand by the topic's question: what's up with the taxi drivers. Taxis are my main mode of transport around Dubai and I'm really surprised at the amount of bad experiences described above, especially so many in a such a short period by the OP. I'm sorry to hear of all the problems you had, hoxtonbabe. I've twice in my hundreds of taxi journeys had problems with drivers not wanting to take me where I wanted to go. The first time I reported the driver to the RTA who then called me back two days later to say the driver had been cautioned. Of course some drivers are grumpy and less friendly than others but I find the vast majority perfectly polite and a significant number friendly, chatty and funny.
I often take a short taxi ride from Dubai Mall to my home and only occasionally do I get complaints that it's a short ride. I feel bad about taking a taxi for such a short journey when I know they've waited a long time and always tip well. As for lecherous drivers, I've read about this before, but I've never noticed it. This could be because if I'm not chatting to the driver I'm usually reading a newspaper and not looking to see if the driver is looking at me, or it could be that I'm the only normal looking woman in a city full of beauty queens! At the end of the day, drivers are obliged to take you to your destination. Get in the taxi first then tell them where you want to go.
How To Pay Taxi Drivers
I always feel guily getting a taxi from MOE to JBH as the drivers have waited so long in the queue for a fare. So I always tip very well at end. I know this does not solve the refusal problem I think there possibly could be a minimum fare for certain distances? How this would work I would never know, but would solve some problems about not being able to get a taxi. As for tipping I thought all Americans were excellent tippers- that is what we were lead to believe when we visited the States,( West, Mid West and East. ) and being insulted for not leaving enough. Yet when travelling out of USA do they expect a 4AED to be adequate.

My husband uses a wheelchair and taxi's really don't like them or any shopping. They never help to put the chair/shopping in the boot or to remove it. Either by husband or I have to sit in the cab while one of us takes the chair/shopping from the boot - as they would drive away with it still in the boot. The only people who help are other visitors or hotel/accommodation staff. However that would never put me off going. I just have learnt how to deal with it.

How many of us pop into Starbucks or similar on the way to work (or whatever) and pick up a coffee for AED 15 and don't even give it a second thought? They earn a pittance, they have a daily target which is unrealistic and are often subject to fines from the company for various things. Next time I get a taxi driver, I will make an effort to have a conversation to find out exactly what their basic is, what their target is and what they can be fined for as I cannot be specific at this time. For the poster whose partner is in a wheelchair, this won't help when flagging a taxi down on the street, but I understand their are now adaptive taxis, but these would need to be booked. I am surprised at the lack of assistance you have received though. If the driver does not offer to help me, I ask. I have had disc surgery and have limits on what I can lift and have never had this experience, to the extent that one taxi driver actually carried my bags into the house for me. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that every taxi experience I have had is good, but how many countries can you think of where you could leave your laptop in a taxi and not remember till the next day (yes, I did that!) and you call to report it and get a call back that afternoon to tell you that you can come and pick it up?
Not too many I would imagine. I've also been refused by taxi drivers several times over the years, the latest when leaving Ibn Battuta Mall with several bags of food shopping and going to Marina Promenade (opposite Jumeirah Beach Residence) which isn't within walking distance! At least 3 taxis refused to take us for some reason. These days I find that most of the drivers don't speak, which I'm more than happy with, but sometimes they don't even tell you how much the fare is! Also, on one occasion when going to Dubai Mall the taxi driver went off in a totally different direction so that when we got there the fare was quite a bit dearer than it'd been when I was there a few days previously so I only gave him what I'd paid the previous time. He didn't say anything because he knew what he'd done and that I knew as well. Dubai taxis are really cheap compared to the UK but I suppose like everywhere else there's always one or two that let the side down.
Have to agree with hoxtonbabe I to have noticed the difference in attitude off taxi drivers When we first went to dubai about 12 years ago if you gave the driver a couple of dirham tip it was thank you very much sir enjoy your holiday Now you are lucky if if you dont get a grunt or dirty luck Im not saying there all the same some are really nice people but dubai just seems to be getting more and more bad ones After being to dubai 10 times we also prefer abu dhabi cheers geordie P.S.
