Despite the fact that we have reviewed the Memory-Map 2003 product in full I am providing a full review of the 2004 Navigator here as well all new features will be highlighted along with a summary of these new items. In a slightly different format I have combined both the PC and PDA reviews into one document this should make it easier to read.

The review is centred around the Navigator product for OS Landranger maps. Other map coverage is dealt with towards the end of the review. It should be emphasised that there are other features in Memory-Map that we do not cover.
Although the digital mapping available for Memory-Map is very much targeted towards the UK market, the availability of the maps is world wide. Memory-Map provides the ability to use commercially available maps and charts in various formats, free USGS maps and other geo-referenced images available for purchase or download from the Internet. The software provides a selection of facilities to manage your maps, waypoints,routes and tracks. These range from freehand plotting of tracks and routes on your map, to filing and organising your waypoints. Introduce your GPS either bluetooth, sleeve, CF GPS, or external GPS receiver and you have a complete navigation system. Memory-Map is commercially produced software which is available Worldwide.
There are two product streams available: Ordnance Survey Edition and Global Edition. The difference is mainly the restrictions that the UK Ordnance Survey place on the usage of their data products. I tried Memory Map, but they said they couldn't/wouldn't swap licensing from one person to another, so in effect, secondhand Memory Map software is useless, so don't be tempted to buy it on ebay. I bought a used GPS and got some MM software with it, so contacted MM to transfer to myself, but no joy. They wouldn't issue a license key for it. Unfortunately you've hit a learning curve I think. Most/all secondhand licensed software can't be transferred to another user. I've had instances where I can't even re-install paid for software on a new machine when my old laptop died. (They don't know I'm telling porkies do they?).

If the ad said you could transfer it, then you might be able to make a claim via ebay/paypal, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The problem with a transfer (from the suppliers perspective) is that while the license to use the software/data might be transferred, the ability to use it is not transferred but is duplicated.
The original licensee is still able to use the product, even though doing so might contravene the terms. Garmin have a different solution, which is to key the license to a machine. This means it is transferable to a new owner, but if the original owner buys a new machine it is not transferable to that. There is no solution that works perfectly for both supplier and customer.
